Jon Cypher

Jon Cypher, born on January 13, 1932, in New York City, is a distinguished American actor whose career spans several decades across television, film, and theater. Cypher completed his education at Erasmus Hall High School in 1949 before earning a degree from Brooklyn College in 1953.

He made his television debut in 1957, portraying the Prince in the original production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella alongside Julie Andrews. Cypher is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Chief of Police Fletcher Daniels on the acclaimed series Hill Street Blues, a role he held from 1981 to 1987. His other notable television roles include Commanding General Marcus Craig on Major Dad, Dr. Alex Keith on As the World Turns, and Dr. Arthur Donelly on Santa Barbara. He also lent his voice to the character of Spellbinder in the animated series Batman Beyond.

In film, Cypher made his mark as the antagonist Frank Tanner in the 1971 Western Valdez Is Coming, featuring Burt Lancaster. His film appearances continued sporadically into the late 1990s.

Cypher's stage career is equally impressive, with a Broadway debut in 1959's The Disenchanted. He also starred in iconic productions such as The Night of the Iguana, Man of La Mancha, and 1776. His contributions to theater have solidified his reputation as a versatile performer capable of tackling both dramatic and musical roles.
