Don Mattingly
Donald Arthur Mattingly, born on April 20, 1961, is a prominent figure in American baseball, recognized as a former first baseman and current manager of the Miami Marlins in Major League Baseball (MLB). Known affectionately as "The Hit Man" and "Donnie Baseball," Mattingly dedicated his entire 14-season playing career to the New York Yankees, later transitioning to management with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
His journey began at Reitz Memorial High School in Evansville, Indiana, leading to his selection by the Yankees in the 1979 amateur draft. After honing his skills in the Minor Leagues, he made his MLB debut in 1982. By 1983, Mattingly had secured the position of starting first baseman, showcasing exceptional talent that earned him six selections to the American League (AL) All-Star team. His illustrious career highlights include winning nine Gold Glove Awards—setting an AL record for first basemen—three Silver Slugger Awards, and the 1984 AL batting title. He was named the 1985 AL Most Valuable Player and served as the Yankees' captain from 1991 until his retirement in 1995. The franchise honored him by retiring his uniform number 23, a unique distinction as he is the only Yankee to receive this honor without a World Series title.
Following his playing career, Mattingly returned to the Yankees as a coach in 2004, later moving with Joe Torre to the Dodgers in 2008. He succeeded Torre as manager in 2011 and parted ways with the team after the 2015 season, eventually taking the helm of the Miami Marlins in 2016.
