Affectionately nicknamed "Batso" for his adventurous spirit and penchant for hanging from sheer cliffs, Harding gained notoriety for leading the first successful ascent of El Capitan’s iconic granite face in Yosemite Valley in 1958. His team’s route, known as "The Nose," ascended an impressive 880 meters and became a benchmark in climbing history, achieved over a grueling 13-day period characterized by challenging weather and relentless determination.

Raised in Downieville, California, a historic gold rush town, Harding's passion for the outdoors blossomed into climbing in the early 1950s, where he found a discipline that emphasized grit over sheer technical prowess.
