6 titles Acting Jul 11, 1916 Died: Nov 16, 2008 Canning Town, London, England, UK

Reg Varney was born in Canning Town, which is now part of the London Borough of Newham, on July 11, 1916. Growing up in a family of five children, his father worked in a rubber factory. Varney attended Star Lane Primary School in West Ham and, upon leaving at just 14, began working as a messenger and page boy at the Regent Palace Hotel. His musical talents emerged early, leading him to perform as a part-time pianist, with his first paid gig at the Plumstead Radical Club.

During World War II, Varney served in the Royal Engineers, where he entertained troops in the Far East. After the war, he gained fame starring in the comic revue "Gaytime" alongside Benny Hill, and subsequently became a popular figure in the music halls.

Varney achieved widespread recognition in the sitcom "The Rag Trade" (1961–63), where he played a foreman, and later showcased his versatility in "The Valiant Varneys" (1964–65). However, his most iconic role was as Stan Butler in "On the Buses" (1969–73), where he depicted a bus driver navigating romantic misadventures. Varney meticulously prepared for this role, even obtaining a bus-driving license for authenticity. The series led to three successful spin-off films.

Beyond television, Varney toured Australia with a one-man show and performed on cruise ships. He also made headlines when he became the first person to withdraw cash from the world's first voucher-based cash machine on June 27, 1967. Varney's contributions to entertainment left an indelible mark, making him a beloved figure in British comedy. He passed away on November 16, 2008.
