Jester Joseph Hairston (July 9, 1901 – January 18, 2000) was a multifaceted American composer, songwriter, arranger, choral conductor, and actor, celebrated for his profound expertise in Negro spirituals and choral music. Among his most recognized works is "Amen," which gained popularity through the film *Lilies of the Field* and later became a hit for The Impressions in 1963, as well as the beloved Christmas classic "Mary's Boy Child," composed in 1956.

Hairston began his career with the Hall Johnson Choir in Harlem, where he initially faced challenges adapting to the choir’s rural dialects. However, he overcame these obstacles, eventually contributing to Broadway productions such as *The Green Pastures*, where the choir performed. His talent caught the attention of composer Dimitri Tiomkin, leading to a fruitful collaboration that spanned three decades, during which Hairston arranged music for numerous films.

In addition to his musical accomplishments, Hairston appeared in over 20 films, often in minor roles, including *To Kill a Mockingbird* and *In the Heat of the Night*. His television career included roles on *The Amos 'n' Andy Show* and *Amen*.

In 1961, he was appointed Goodwill Ambassador by the U.S. State Department, promoting folk music worldwide and engaging high school choirs in the rich tradition of Negro spirituals. Hairston passed away at the age of 98 in Los Angeles, leaving behind a legacy honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He is interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery in California.
