Karl Gustav Kalkun (April 9, 1927 – February 21, 1990) was a prominent Estonian actor known for his extensive contributions to the theatre and film industry. Born in Tartu into a family deeply connected to the arts, Karl was the son of Karl Kalkun Sr., a stage manager at the Vanemuine theatre, and Emma Helene Kalkun (née Engelbär). His athletic lineage also included his uncle, Gustav Kalkun, a noted discus and hammer thrower.

After completing his secondary education at Tartu Secondary School No. 1 (now known as Hugo Treffner Gymnasium) in 1946, he pursued legal studies at Tartu State University, graduating in 1956. Kalkun's acting career began at the Vanemuine theatre, where he performed from 1951 to 1958. He subsequently joined the Estonian Drama Theatre (1958-1965) and later the Estonian Youth Theatre (1965-1978), before concluding his illustrious career at the Estonia Theatre from 1978 until his passing in 1990. In addition to his stage work, Kalkun made notable appearances in various films.

In his personal life, he first married Estelle Piirand, with whom he had a son, Andres, before their divorce. He later wed Mare Kiisküla, and together they welcomed two sons, Kristjan, a sports journalist, and Kaarel, a lawyer. Kalkun passed away from a heart attack at the age of 62 while filming a retrospective interview at Eesti Televisioon studios in Tallinn. His legacy continues to influence Estonian theatre and cinema.
