John Aylward (November 7, 1946 – May 16, 2022) was a distinguished American actor celebrated for his compelling performances in both television and film. He gained widespread recognition for his role as Barry Goodwin, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, on NBC's acclaimed series The West Wing. Additionally, Aylward portrayed Dr. Donald Anspaugh on the hit medical drama ER, a character that showcased his remarkable range as an actor. He also lent his voice to Dr. Arne Magnusson in the popular video game Half-Life 2: Episode Two, further demonstrating his versatile talents.

Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Aylward's passion for acting took root early in his life. He graduated from Garfield High School in 1965 and completed the Professional Actor's Training Program at the University of Washington in 1970. In 1973, he co-founded the Empty Space Theatre in Seattle and dedicated 15 years to performing with the Seattle Repertory Theatre before transitioning to a successful career in television and film during the 1990s. His breakthrough in television came when Carol Flynt, a co-producer of ER, recognized his talent in a 1996 production of "Psychopathia Sexualis" at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, leading to an audition that changed the course of his career. Aylward’s contributions to the performing arts left a lasting impact, making him a respected figure in the industry.
