In November 2014, Gurmit announced his departure from Mediacorp, marking the end of a significant chapter in his career, as he sought to prioritize quality time with his family.

Gurmit is perhaps most famous for his iconic portrayal of Phua Chu Kang in the hit series "Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd," a character that resonated deeply with audiences and showcased his comedic talents. His outstanding performance earned him the prestigious Asian Television Awards for Best Performance by an Actor (Comedy) five times, from 1998 to 2001 and again in 2003.
