Sir Alexander Matthew Busby CBE (26 May 1909 – 20 January 1994) was a renowned Scottish footballer and manager, best known for his iconic tenure at Manchester United from 1945 to 1969 and briefly in the 1970–71 season. He made history as the first English manager to lift the European Cup, solidifying his legacy as one of football's most esteemed figures.

Busby’s playing career began with fierce rivals Manchester City and Liverpool. While at City, he reached two FA Cup Finals, securing victory in one. His playing days were curtailed by World War II, after which he sought a coaching role at Liverpool. However, the club's reluctance to grant him full managerial control led him to accept the managerial position at Manchester United, a pivotal decision that would change the club's fortunes.

At United, Busby forged the legendary "Busby Babes," a team that not only dominated the Football League First Division but also made significant strides in European football. Tragically, the Munich air disaster claimed the lives of eight of his players, but Busby’s resilience shone through as he rebuilt the squad. Under his guidance, the club clinched numerous titles, including five league championships and the coveted European Cup in 1968. Over his remarkable 25-year career at Manchester United, Busby accumulated 13 major trophies, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.
