Al Ernest Garcia

Al Ernest Garcia (March 11, 1887 – September 4, 1938) was an American actor renowned for his extensive collaboration with the legendary Charlie Chaplin. Between 1921 and 1936, Garcia featured in six of Chaplin's films, often taking on roles that were either clinical or villainous in nature. Notable performances include his portrayal of the harsh circus director in The Circus (1928), the pretentious butler of a wealthy man in City Lights (1931), and the factory owner in Modern Times (1936). In addition to his acting contributions, Garcia served as a casting director for Chaplin's works on The Circus, City Lights, and Modern Times.

In 1933, Garcia played a pivotal role in establishing the Motion Picture Extras and Supporting Players Association, which aimed to advocate for the rights and recognition of supporting actors in the film industry. His legacy in Hollywood is marked by his significant contributions to early cinema and his dedication to improving conditions for fellow performers. Garcia's career remains a testament to his talent and his lasting impact on the film world, particularly through his association with one of its most iconic figures.
