Frank Cady
Frank Cady is perhaps best recognized for his iconic portrayal of Sam Drucker, the genial general-store owner in the rural community of Hooterville, featured in the beloved television series "Green Acres" (1965) and "Petticoat Junction" (1963). However, Cady's career as an actor spanned several decades and included extensive work in film, stage, and television long before these popular shows. He also made appearances on radio dramas, including the noteworthy program "Gunsmoke."
In the 1950s, Cady took on the role of Doc Williams in "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" (1952) and was involved in various supporting roles in films, alongside appearing in television commercials for products like Shasta Grape Soda. Demonstrating remarkable versatility, he was the only actor to portray a recurring character in three sitcoms simultaneously: "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1962), "Green Acres" (1965), and "Petticoat Junction" (1963). Often cast as an affable small-town businessman or clerk, Cady was born in Susanville, California, in 1915.
His passion for acting ignited during an elementary school performance, leading him to train in theater after graduating from Stanford University in London. When World War II commenced, he enlisted in the Army Air Force and served across Europe. Following his discharge, he returned to the U.S., where an agent discovered him in a local production, launching his Hollywood career. An early standout role for him was in the film noir classic "He Walked by Night" (1948). Over the next four decades, he played a variety of roles, including hotel clerks and henpecked husbands.
At the time of his passing, Cady lived in Wilsonville, Oregon, and was surrounded by his two children, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
