Dixie Carter
Dixie Virginia Carter (May 25, 1939 – April 10, 2010) was a distinguished American actress celebrated for her captivating performances on both stage and screen. She gained widespread recognition for her iconic role as Julia Sugarbaker in the beloved sitcom Designing Women, which aired from 1986 to 1993. Additionally, she portrayed Randi King in the legal drama Family Law from 1999 to 2002. Her exceptional talent earned her a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in 2007 for her memorable portrayal of Gloria Hodge on Desperate Housewives (2006–2007).
Carter's theatrical journey began in 1960 with her debut in a Memphis production of the musical Carousel, leading to her Broadway debut in the 1974 musical Sextet. She showcased her versatility in various roles, including a two-year stint as District Attorney Brandy Henderson on the CBS soap opera The Edge of Night (1974–1976) and a part in the Broadway revival of Pal Joey in 1976. Other television credits include appearances in On Our Own (1977–1978), Filthy Rich (1982–1983), and Diff'rent Strokes (1984–1985). She returned to Broadway later in her career, earning acclaim for her portrayal of Maria Callas in Master Class in 1997 and Mrs. Meers in Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2004.
Carter was married to actor Hal Holbrook, her third husband, from 1984 until her passing. Her legacy continues to inspire many in the entertainment industry.
