Craig D. Jessop, born in 1949, is an esteemed American academic, musician, and vocalist, renowned for his role as the music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir from 1999 to 2008. Hailing from Millville, Utah, Jessop has been a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life. He pursued his education under the mentorship of Robert Shaw, earning a B.A. from Utah State University, an M.A. from Brigham Young University, and a D.M.A. from Stanford University.

In 2005, Jessop established himself as the director of the National High School Choir Festival held at Carnegie Hall, where he provides an inspiring platform for young singers from across the nation to engage with celebrated musicians and explore significant musical works. His impressive background also includes seven years as a baritone with the Robert Shaw Festival Singers and performances with distinguished choirs conducted by Helmuth Rilling and John Rutter.

Before leading the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Jessop had a successful career in the U.S. Air Force, serving as a lieutenant colonel. His military roles included directing the Singing Sergeants and conducting various bands in Europe. He initially began his musical journey as the director of choral activities at Granite High School in Salt Lake City.

Under Jessop’s leadership, the Choir garnered numerous accolades, including the Special Recognition Award from the International Radio and Television Society Foundation and the National Medal of Arts presented by President George W. Bush. In 2008, he unexpectedly resigned, citing a personal crossroads and a desire to focus on family. Jessop and his wife are proud parents of four children and grandparents to eleven grandchildren.
