Fatima AlBanawi

Fatima AlBanawi is a distinguished Saudi Arabian writer, actress, and theatre director, recognized for her innovative approach to intertwining the arts with social impact. As the founder of The Other Story Project, which began in 2015, she has been pivotal in transforming public spaces in Jeddah by collecting nearly 5,000 real-life narratives. Many of these compelling stories have been adapted into various productions, including the poignant short film "A Blink of an Eye." AlBanawi’s performances have reached prestigious venues globally, from the inaugural Biennale in Buenos Aires to Palais de Tokyo in Paris, where she has shared profound human stories.

Her work has garnered significant acclaim; Time Magazine honored her as a Next Generation Leader, and she has been described as the "Sophie Calle of Saudi Arabia" after her acclaimed piece, “Amours Saoudiennes.” AlBanawi holds a master's degree in Theological Studies from Harvard University, focusing on Gender and Identity within the Muslim diaspora and contemporary Middle Eastern narratives. Her upcoming book, *The Other Story*, will blend personal memoir and social commentary based on her extensive field research.

AlBanawi's theatrical journey began in 2010 when she co-founded the Theatre of the Oppressed chapter in Jeddah. More recently, her directorial and acting work in *The Straight Circle* has challenged traditional theatre norms by bringing performances into the streets. She gained international recognition for her role in the award-winning film *Barakah Meets Barakah* and continues to influence the Saudi film community as an acting coach at her studio, Alf Wad. Her contributions have been highlighted in various prominent media outlets, including Financial Times, Variety, and France 24.
