Daniel Toscan du Plantier
Daniel Toscan du Plantier (April 7, 1941 – February 11, 2003) was a prominent French film producer whose influence in the cinematic world left a lasting legacy. He received his education at the prestigious Institut d'Etudes Politiques and began his career in the media sector as the advertising manager for the France Soir newspaper in 1966. His significant contributions to the film industry came during his tenure as director-general of Gaumont Film Company from 1975 to 1985, where he played a pivotal role in reviving the studio’s fortunes. In 1988, he was appointed president of Unifrance, an organization dedicated to promoting French cinema internationally, a position he held until his passing.
Toscan du Plantier's personal life was marked by four marriages and the blessing of three sons and two daughters. His first wife was the talented French actress Marie-Christine Barrault, with whom he had two children. He later married Italian filmmaker Francesca Comencini, with whom he welcomed another son. His third marriage to Sophie Toscan du Plantier ended tragically when she was murdered in 1996, a case that remains unresolved in Ireland but resulted in the conviction of Ian Bailey in France in 2019. His final marriage to Melita Nikolic in 1998 further expanded his family, as they had two children together.
