Virginia Cherrill
Virginia Cherrill (April 12, 1908 - November 14, 1996) was a notable American actress, celebrated primarily for her poignant portrayal of the blind flower girl in Charlie Chaplin's silent classic, *City Lights* (1931). Born on a farm in Carthage, Illinois, to James E. and Blanche Cherrill, she had no intention of pursuing an acting career while enjoying a privileged upbringing in Chicago's high society. Her life took a dramatic turn when she met Chaplin at a boxing match, leading to her casting in the iconic film, despite a tumultuous working relationship that included her temporary dismissal from the project.
Cherrill's performance in *City Lights* remains her most enduring legacy, although she appeared in other films such as the 1931 musical *Delicious*, featuring Janet Gaynor. She eventually stepped back from acting in 1936 after her role in *Troubled Waters*.
Throughout her life, Virginia Cherrill was married four times, including a brief union with the famous actor Cary Grant from 1934 to 1935, and her marriage to George Child-Villiers, the 9th Earl of Jersey, from 1937 to 1946. Her final and longest marriage was to Florian Martini, lasting from 1948 until her passing at the age of 88 in Santa Barbara, California. Cherrill's contributions to cinema were honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 1545 Vine Street.
