Annie Fratellini

Annie Violette Fratellini (14 November 1932 – 1 July 1997) was a celebrated French circus performer, singer, actress, and clown, known for her remarkable contributions to the world of entertainment. Born in Algiers, French Algeria, into the renowned Fratellini family, she was the fourth generation of a legacy steeped in circus tradition. Her father, Victor Fratellini, was an acrobat and clown, while her mother, Suzanne Rousseau, hailed from a lineage connected to the famous Cirque de Paris.

Fratellini made her stage debut at the young age of 13 at Cirque Medrano in Paris, yet she chose to leave the circus behind at 18 to pursue a career in music and film. She gained recognition for her acting, most notably in the 1965 film "La Métamorphose des cloportes," directed by her husband, Pierre Granier-Deferre. In 1969, she married comedian Pierre Étaix, with whom she formed a dynamic clown duo, captivating audiences with their performances that blended humor and artistry.

In 1975, they co-founded the École Nationale du Cirque, one of Europe's pioneering professional circus schools, and established the Nouveau Cirque de Paris, a sophisticated touring circus. Following their divorce in 1987, Fratellini continued to lead the school, which eventually became the Académie Fratellini, a major institution for circus arts in France. Annie Fratellini passed away from cancer on 1 July 1997, leaving behind a rich legacy in the performing arts and a profound impact on the circus community. She is interred at the Cimetière de Montmartre in Paris, resting alongside her illustrious family.
