Shijaku Katsura
Katsura Shijaku II (桂 枝雀, Nidaime Katsura Shijaku), born Tōru Maeda on August 13, 1939, in Kobe, Japan, was a distinguished rakugo artist renowned for his ability to perform in English during the late 20th century. Growing up as the son of a brick-maker, he developed a passion for storytelling that would eventually lead him to the world of traditional Japanese comedy.
In 1960, Shijaku embarked on his rakugo journey under the mentorship of the esteemed Katsura Beichō III (桂米朝). After rigorous training, he adopted the stage name Katsura Koyone X (桂小米), showcasing his comedic talent. In 1974, he rebranded himself as Shijaku Katsura, solidifying his identity in the rakugo community.
Throughout his career, Katsura Shijaku II gained acclaim not only for his captivating performances but also for his role in promoting rakugo beyond Japan's borders. His unique ability to convey the nuances of this traditional art form in English allowed him to reach a wider audience, bridging cultural gaps.
Katsura's legacy includes numerous performances both in Japan and internationally, contributing to the global appreciation of rakugo.
