**Sylvain Saudan: A Legacy in Extreme Skiing**

Born on September 23, 1936, in Lausanne, Switzerland, Sylvain Saudan emerged as a groundbreaking figure in the world of extreme skiing. He passed away on July 14, 2024, in Les Houches, France, leaving behind a remarkable legacy as a skier and mountaineer, often referred to as the “skier of the impossible.”

Saudan's journey began in Lausanne, but his family relocated to Valais in 1939 due to financial hardships. His passion for skiing ignited at the age of five when he received his first pair of skis. After completing his education, he worked in construction while honing his skiing skills in local competitions, eventually serving as president of the Martigny-Combe ski club in 1959. By 1961, he had attained his Swiss ski instructor certification and began teaching in Crans-Montana.

His international career took off in 1962 when he worked as a ski instructor in various resorts across the globe, including Aspen, Colorado, and Christchurch, New Zealand. Between 1967 and 1973, Saudan achieved numerous first descents, utilizing helicopters to reach remote locations—a method that drew criticism from traditionalists.

Though initially overlooked by the media, his daring descents, particularly of the Gervasutti Couloir and Aiguille de Bionnassay, gained him recognition and led to a successful speaking career. Notably, in 1982, he skied down Gasherbrum I, becoming the first to complete a full descent from an 8,000-meter peak, which earned him a spot in the Guinness Book of Records. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, he received the “Alpine Merit” award in 2016 and had a couloir named after him at Whistler Blackcomb in 2017. Saudan's ashes were scattered on the Aiguille de Bionnass
