Maria Bethânia Viana Teles Veloso, born on June 18, 1946, in Santo Amaro, Bahia, is a celebrated Brazilian singer and songwriter. She launched her artistic journey in 1964 with the influential show "Opinião" in Rio de Janeiro, which catapulted her into the limelight. Her 1965 hit "Carcará" further solidified her status as a prominent figure in Brazilian music.

As the sister of renowned musician Caetano Veloso and writer Mabel Velloso, and the aunt of singers Belô and Jota Velloso, Bethânia comes from a deeply artistic family. Over her impressive 47-year career, she has released an astonishing 50 studio albums and sold over 26 million records, making her one of Brazil's top-selling music artists. In 2012, Rolling Stone Brasil recognized her as the fifth-greatest voice in Brazilian music history.

Bethânia's early aspirations leaned towards acting, influenced by her mother’s musical background. After relocating to Salvador at age 13, she immersed herself in the city's vibrant cultural scene. A pivotal moment arrived when she accepted an invitation to perform in the 1963 musical "Boca de Ouro," marking her stage debut.

In collaboration with her brother Caetano and friends Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa, she participated in various successful shows, including "Nós, por exemplo" and "Nova Bossa Velha e Velha Bossa Nova."
