Jan Gehl, born on September 17, 1936, in Copenhagen, is a renowned Danish architect and urban design consultant whose work has revolutionized urban living by prioritizing pedestrian and cyclist accessibility. As a founding partner of Gehl Architects, he has dedicated his career to enhancing the quality of urban environments.

Gehl earned his Master of Architecture from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (KADK) in 1960, and he practiced architecture until 1966 when he received a research grant to explore "the form and use of public spaces." His seminal work, *Life Between Buildings*, published in 1971, presents his findings on public life in urban areas and lays the foundation for understanding how urban design impacts social interaction. He later became a professor of urban planning at KADK and has served as a visiting professor globally. In 2000, he co-founded Gehl Architects with Helle Søholt, where he maintained a partner role until 2011 and continues to serve as a Senior Advisor.

Gehl’s approach combines meticulous documentation of urban spaces with gradual, incremental improvements, a method evident in his influential book *Public Spaces, Public Life*. His work significantly contributed to transforming Copenhagen into a pedestrian-friendly city, exemplified by the Strøget car-free zone, one of Europe’s longest pedestrian shopping streets.

His expertise has been sought globally, influencing urban design in cities such as London, New York, and various Australian and New Zealand metropolises, through impactful studies and projects aimed at enhancing public spaces.
