Sharpe James

Sharpe James, born on February 20, 1936, is a notable American politician who made significant contributions to Newark, New Jersey, serving as its 37th mayor from 1986 to 2006. His tenure was marked by efforts to revitalize the city and improve community services. Additionally, he represented the 29th legislative district as a state senator from 1999 until 2008. James's political journey was prominently featured in the 2005 documentary film "Street Fight," which chronicled the competitive nature of urban politics.

Before embarking on his political career, James was deeply involved in education as a teacher, athletic director, and professor at Essex County College, fostering a passion for community engagement and youth development.
