Catherine Hiegel, born on December 10, 1946, is a distinguished French actress, comedian, and director. Hailing from a family deeply rooted in the arts, she is the daughter of Pierre Hiegel, a prominent radio host and music critic, and the niece of the well-known broadcaster Pierre Bellemare.

Catherine's artistic journey began at a young age; at just ten years old, she portrayed Cosette in a radio adaptation of Victor Hugo's "Les Misérables," sharing the stage with her father, who played Jean Valjean. Her early exposure to performance continued in 1956 when she sang alongside André Claveau in "Viens danser avec papa."

Following her father's guidance, Hiegel left formal education to pursue acting, studying under notable instructors such as Raymond Girard and Jacques Charon. Her professional debut occurred at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in the play "Cactus Flower," where she performed with Jean Poiret and Sophie Desmarets. She further honed her craft at the French National Academy of Dramatic Arts, studying under Jean Marchat, Lise Delamare, and Jean-Laurent Cochet.

In 1969, Hiegel joined the prestigious Comédie-Française, where she showcased her versatility by working with renowned directors like Philippe Adrien, Patrice Chéreau, and Dario Fo across a range of classical and modern works. Following the passing of Christine Fersen in 2008, she became the Dean of the troupe. Additionally, Hiegel has contributed to the next generation of actors as a professor at CNSAD for over thirteen years. Her talent has been recognized with two Molière Awards from five nominations, solidifying her status as a prominent figure in French theater.
