Johan Rockström
Johan Rockström, born on December 31, 1965, is a prominent Swedish scientist renowned for his expertise in global sustainability. He serves as the co-director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany, alongside economist Ottmar Edenhofer. In addition, Rockström holds the position of chief scientist at Conservation International and is a professor of Earth System Science at the University of Potsdam as well as a professor of Water Systems and Global Sustainability at Stockholm University.
Rockström is best known for his groundbreaking work on the planetary boundaries framework, which was introduced in 2009. This influential model identifies nine critical planetary boundaries, ranging from climate change to biodiversity loss, which are essential for ensuring a "safe operating space for humanity."
His career also includes significant leadership roles such as the executive director of the Stockholm Environment Institute from 2004 to 2012 and director of the Stockholm Resilience Centre from 2007 to 2018. Throughout his career, Rockström has contributed extensively to the discourse on sustainability and resilience, making him a key figure in the global environmental movement.
