Maria Gladys Mello da Silva, born on November 23, 1939, is a distinguished Brazilian actress renowned for her significant contributions to theater and cinema. She made her theatrical debut in 1959 with a performance in Arthur Azevedo's play "O Mambembe" at the esteemed Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro. Gladys gained considerable attention when she appeared topless on the promotional poster for the provocative play "O Chão dos Penitentes," which further established her presence in the theatrical scene.

In 1964, she featured in Ruy Guerra's acclaimed film "Os Fuzis," a work that garnered the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival and received a nomination for the prestigious Golden Bear. Often referred to as the mother of marginal cinema, Gladys used her art as a form of resistance against the oppressive Brazilian dictatorship, a stance that ultimately led to her exile in London from 1965 to 1979.
