Jojo Mayer
Jojo Mayer is a renowned Swiss drummer who hails from Zürich and now calls New York City home. Born into a musical family, Mayer's passion for drumming ignited early; he received his first drum kit at just two years old. A self-taught musician, he made his professional debut at 18 with the Monty Alexander group, which marked his entrance into the vibrant jazz scene. His impressive career has seen him perform at prestigious events like the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, and in cities such as Nice and Athens. Throughout his journey, he has shared the stage with legendary artists like Dizzy Gillespie and Nina Simone.
While Mayer initially made his mark in jazz, he later transitioned into the realms of Drum 'n' Bass, where he has gained acclaim for blending jazz elements with electronic styles. He pioneered the technique known as "reverse engineering," allowing him to replicate intricate programmed beats on acoustic drums. This innovative approach incorporates advanced drumming methods like the heel-toe technique and the Moeller stroke, enabling him to achieve remarkable tempos.
Mayer is also the founder of the live electronica trio Nerve, established in 1997, and has collaborated with guitarist David Fiuczynski in the avant-garde band Screaming Headless Torsos, as well as in the fusion jazz ensemble Intergalactic Maiden Ballet. Additionally, he hosted the influential Prohibited Beatz live electronica event in New York City from 1996 to 2001, further cementing his status as a key figure in the contemporary music scene.
