John Dair (3 March 1933 – 25 November 2005) was a prominent Scottish actor renowned for his memorable performances in television and film. Best remembered for his role as "Crusher," the imposing bodyguard to Harry Grout in the beloved sitcom *Porridge*, Dair also captivated audiences as Charlie Dawson in the acclaimed drama *Our Friends in the North*.

Originally hailing from Dundee, Scotland, Dair spent a significant portion of his life in London, England. Before embarking on his acting career, he worked as a mobile crane and bulldozer operator on construction sites, and even dabbled in singing. His breakthrough came while he was performing at the Lyceum Theatre in London, which led to his casting in *Porridge*. One of his standout moments in the series is a scene where his character humorously reacts to a repeated joke, showcasing his comedic talent.

In addition to television, Dair had notable appearances in films, including a role as Vinnie Ricorso, a crime boss who meets a grim fate at the hands of the Joker in *Batman*. In 1984, he gained further recognition in pop culture by appearing in the iconic music video for Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax," where he portrayed a Roman emperor in a nightclub setting. He also featured in the music video for the hit "Two Tribes." Dair's presence extended to commercials, notably the 1985 Levi Strauss & Co. jeans ad featuring Nick Kamen. He passed away from lung cancer in 2005, leaving behind a legacy in the entertainment industry.
