Emad Burnat

1 title Directing Jan 01, 1971 Palestine

Emad Burnat, born in 1971, is a Palestinian farmer and filmmaker who gained international recognition as the first Palestinian to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. His acclaimed film, "5 Broken Cameras," offers an intimate perspective on life and protests in Bil'in, a West Bank village situated near Israeli settlements. Co-directed with Israeli filmmaker Guy Davidi, the documentary unfolds in chapters, each centered around the destruction of Burnat's cameras, capturing the evolution of his family amidst five years of turmoil.

"5 Broken Cameras" is a collaborative production involving Palestinian, Israeli, and French filmmakers. Its unique narrative style, along with Burnat's partnership with an Israeli counterpart, has sparked debate within the Palestinian community, particularly due to the ongoing boycott against Israel. This boycott generally excludes collaborations with Israeli activists, but the controversy arose when Israel claimed the film as its own following its Oscar nomination in 2012.

On February 19, 2013, Burnat and his family were detained at Los Angeles International Airport, as customs officials questioned the legitimacy of their visit to the U.S. Reflecting on the incident, Burnat stated, “Although this has been an unpleasant experience, it is a daily occurrence for us Palestinians... There are more than 500 Israeli checkpoints, roadblocks, and other obstacles to movement in our territory, and none of us were spared from the experience my family and I went through yesterday."
