Vera Ann Farmiga (born August 6, 1973) is a distinguished American actress. She embarked on her professional acting journey in the theater, making her mark in the original Broadway production of Taking Sides in 1996. Farmiga transitioned to film and television, gaining recognition with her compelling portrayal of a drug addict in the drama Down to the Bone (2004). This performance opened doors to notable roles in the political thriller The Manchurian Candidate (2004), the acclaimed crime drama The Departed (2006), and the poignant historical drama The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008). She also gained a reputation as a scream queen, notably for her roles in the horror films Joshua (2007) and Orphan (2009).

Her role in the comedy-drama Up in the Air (2009) earned her an Academy Award nomination among other honors. In 2011, she made her directorial debut with Higher Ground, where she also played the lead.
