Mario Del Monaco (July 27, 1915 – October 16, 1982) was a celebrated Italian tenor renowned for his powerful and emotive singing in the operatic genre. Born in Florence to a musically inclined upper-class family, with a Neapolitan father and Sicilian mother, Del Monaco initially pursued the violin before discovering his passion for vocal performance. He honed his craft at the Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro, where he collaborated with the acclaimed soprano Renata Tebaldi, forming a notable partnership in the 1950s.

Del Monaco made his professional debut on December 31, 1940, at Milan's Puccini Theater, portraying Pinkerton. His career flourished during World War II, and in 1946, he made his debut at London's Royal Opera House, quickly gaining prominence for his dramatic interpretations and robust tenor voice, especially within the Italian repertoire. He was particularly celebrated for his roles in Verdi operas, such as Radamès in Aida and Otello, the latter being a defining role throughout his career, with a staggering number of performances.

From 1951 to 1959, Del Monaco graced the stage of the New York Metropolitan Opera, becoming one of the leading tenor figures of his time, alongside other luminaries like Giuseppe Di Stefano and Franco Corelli. His recordings, including collaborations with Tebaldi for Decca, added to his legacy, earning him the nickname "Brass Bull of Milan." Del Monaco's contributions to opera remain significant, leaving an indelible mark on the art form.
