Following Pope John XXIII, he played a pivotal role in the continuation and conclusion of the Second Vatican Council, which he wrapped up in 1965. Recognized for his virtuous life, he was declared venerable by Pope Benedict XVI on December 20, 2012, and was canonized by Pope Francis on October 14, 2018. His feast day is celebrated on May 29, the anniversary of his priestly ordination.
