Alain Mabanckou

1 title Acting Feb 24, 1966 Pointe-Noire, Congo

Alain Mabanckou, born on February 24, 1966, in the Republic of the Congo, is a prolific novelist, poet, journalist, and academic. Currently serving as a Professor of Literature at UCLA, Mabanckou is celebrated for his literary contributions that explore the complexities of contemporary Africa and the African diaspora in France. He is recognized as one of the foremost African writers in the French language and has earned the distinction of being likened to "the Samuel Beckett of Africa" in certain Parisian literary circles.

Mabanckou's works often spark debate, particularly his views on the responsibility of Africans for their own challenges, which have drawn criticism from some in the literary community. He challenges the notion that African and Caribbean authors should restrict their narratives to local experiences, advocating instead for broader themes that transcend traditional categories of nation, race, and territory.

Raised in Pointe-Noire, he completed his baccalaureate in Letters and Philosophy before pursuing law studies at Marien Ngouabi University. At 22, he moved to France on a scholarship and began publishing his poetry. His first novel, *Bleu-Blanc-Rouge*, released in 1998, earned him the Grand Prix Littéraire d'Afrique Noire.

Among his notable works is *African Psycho* (2003), narrated by a fictional serial killer, and *Verre cassé* (2005), a humorous exploration of life through the eyes of a former teacher in a Congolese bar, which was later adapted for the stage. His English translation of *Verre cassé*, titled *Broken Glass*, was published in 2009, cementing his status in global literature.
