Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi (circa 1942 – 20 October 2011), widely recognized as Colonel Gaddafi, was a significant figure in Libyan history, serving as a revolutionary leader and political theorist. He came to power in 1969 after leading a coup that overthrew the monarchy, subsequently ruling Libya as the Revolutionary Chairman of the Libyan Arab Republic until 1977. After this period, he adopted the title of "Brotherly Leader" of the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, a position he held until his death in 2011.
Initially, Gaddafi was influenced by Arab nationalism and socialism, but he later formulated his own ideological framework known as the Third International Theory, which emphasized direct democracy and economic self-sufficiency. His leadership was marked by extensive social and economic reforms, including the nationalization of oil resources and the establishment of welfare programs that aimed to improve education and healthcare in Libya.
