Leslie Cheung
Leslie Cheung Kwok-Wing (Chinese: 張國榮; September 12, 1956 – April 1, 2003) was a renowned Hong Kong Canadian singer and actor whose influence continues to resonate in the entertainment industry. Born in Hong Kong, Cheung relocated to the UK in 1971 to study fashion design in Leeds. After completing his education, he returned to Hong Kong, where he made his mark in the music scene by securing second place in the ATV Asian Music Contest in 1977. This victory paved the way for his debut album, *I Like Dreaming*, released in 1978.
Over the span of his remarkable 26-year career, Cheung released more than 40 albums and starred in 56 films, becoming a pivotal figure in the evolution of Cantopop during the 1980s with his extravagant stage presence. His film career flourished in the 1990s, showcasing his courage to portray queer characters in an era of conservative cinema. Notable performances include his role in Wong Kar-wai’s *Happy Together* and the acclaimed *Farewell My Concubine*, which won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993.
Tragically, Leslie Cheung's life ended on April 1, 2003, when he died by suicide at the age of 46. In his final note, he expressed his struggles with depression. His legacy remains significant, inspiring discussions on mental health and representation in the arts.
