Adrianne Allen
Adrianne Allen (February 7, 1907 – September 14, 1993) was a distinguished English stage actress known for her contributions to both the West End and Broadway. Born in Manchester, she received her education in France and Germany before honing her craft at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her graduation performance in 1926 impressed director Basil Dean, leading to her debut role as Nina Vansittart in Noel Coward's Easy Virtue.
In 1930, Allen made her West End debut as Sybil Chase in Coward's Private Lives, a role that solidified her status in the theatrical community. She also portrayed Elizabeth Bennet in the 1935 Broadway adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Allen's onstage success was complemented by her film appearances, including the notable Merrily We Go to Hell.
She was married to fellow actor Raymond Massey from 1929 until their divorce in 1939, during which they welcomed two children, Daniel and Anna Massey, both of whom also pursued acting careers. Following her divorce, she wed American lawyer William Whitney.
Her later career included a significant role in Terence Rattigan's Flare Path in 1942 and a return to Broadway in 1957, where she starred in The Reluctant Debutante alongside her daughter. Allen retired from acting in 1958 and passed away from cancer in Montreux, Switzerland, on September 14, 1993, leaving behind a rich legacy in the performing arts.
