Willie Nelson
Willie Hugh Nelson, born on April 30, 1933, is a celebrated American country singer-songwriter, author, poet, actor, and activist. He emerged as a pivotal figure in the Outlaw Movement, a distinctive subgenre of Country music that took shape from the late 1960s into the early 1980s. Nelson achieved critical acclaim with albums like *Shotgun Willie* and *Phases and Stages*, while his commercially successful record *Red Headed Stranger* solidified his status as a prominent figure in the country music landscape. Beyond music, Nelson is well-known for his philanthropic efforts; he co-founded the Farm Aid charity concert and actively advocates for marijuana legalization and biofuels.
Nelson's musical journey began with mail-order lessons gifted by his grandparents. He wrote his first song at just seven years old and joined his first band at nine. After graduating high school in 1950, he briefly served in the Air Force but was discharged due to back issues. He then studied at Baylor University for two years before leaving to pursue music full-time, working as a disc jockey and performing in honky tonks. His songwriting flourished in Vancouver, Washington, where he penned the hit "Family Bible." In 1960, after signing a publishing deal with Pamper Music, he joined Ray Price's band and wrote enduring songs such as "Crazy" and "Hello Walls." His first album, *And Then I Wrote*, was recorded in 1962, leading him to sign with RCA Victor and join the Grand Ole Opry in 1965.
A passionate liberal activist, Nelson co-chairs the advisory board of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws and owns the bio-diesel brand Willie Nelson Biodiesel. He has been a driving force behind Farm Aid since its inception in 1985, organizing concerts and collaborating with numerous artists. Additionally, he serves as the Honorary Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Texas Music Project
