In recognition of his contributions to the arts, Queen Elizabeth II knighted him in 1991.

McKellen's acting journey began in 1961 at the Belgrade Theatre, leading to his first West End appearance in 1965. By 1969, he was performing lead roles in Shakespeare's *Richard II* and Marlowe's *Edward II* with the Prospect Theatre Company. Throughout the 1970s, he became a prominent actor with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, earning five Olivier Awards for his outstanding performances in productions such as *Pillars of the Community* and *Richard III*. His Broadway debut in *The Promise* (1965) led to a Tony Award win for Best Actor in a Play for his portrayal of Antonio Salieri in *Amadeus* (1980).

McKellen gained international notoriety through his memorable film roles, including the title character in *Richard III* (1995), Magneto in the *X-Men* series, and Gandalf in *The Lord of the Rings* and *The Hobbit* trilogies. An advocate for LGBT rights since coming out in 1988, he co-founded Stonewall and remains an influential figure in promoting equality. In 2014, he was honored with the Freedom of the City of London.
