James Luisi
James Luisi, originally from New York City, earned a basketball scholarship to St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights. His service in the Army took him to the Korean War, after which he made a brief foray into professional basketball, playing for the Baltimore Bullets during the 1953-54 NBA season. Luisi's transition to acting began on the stage, with his early performances in notable Broadway musicals such as "Sweet Charity" and "Zorba." While his initial film roles were minor, he gained some recognition for his "beefcake" image in the 1973 film "I Escaped from Devil's Island," where he spent much of the time without a shirt.
In the realm of television, Luisi's career flourished. He won a Daytime Emmy Award for "Best Actor" in 1976 for portraying George Washington in the special "First Ladies Diaries: Martha Washington." That same year, he also began a four-season stint as Lt. Chapman, the adversary of Jim Rockford (played by James Garner) in "The Rockford Files." He appeared in the 1983 series "The Renegades," which helped to launch Patrick Swayze's career, and made guest appearances on several other TV programs. Additionally, Luisi was part of the soap operas "Days of Our Lives" and "Another World."
In the 1990s, he returned to his roots in theater, taking on both acting and directing roles in Los Angeles. Sadly, Luisi succumbed to cancer on June 7, 2002, leaving behind his wife of 41 years, Georgia Phillips.
