Suraj Sharma
Suraj Sharma is a talented actor from New Delhi, India, best known for his lead role in the critically acclaimed 2012 film Life of Pi. Born in New Delhi to parents of Malayali descent, originally from Kerala, he pursued his education at St. Stephen's College, where he is studying philosophy. Suraj completed his schooling at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, where he was well-liked among his peers.
Remarkably, Suraj had no prior acting experience before landing his iconic role as Piscine Molitor Patel, known as Pi. His journey into acting began when he accompanied his younger brother, Shriharsh Sharma, to an audition. Out of approximately 3,000 hopefuls, Suraj was selected after impressively navigating multiple rounds of auditions. Director Ang Lee noted that he was drawn to Suraj due to his expressive eyes and innocent demeanor, which embodied the essence of the character. Suraj's "medium complexion" and "average build" were also considered ideal for the role.
Following the success of Life of Pi, which garnered widespread acclaim and praise for his performance, Suraj returned to his academic pursuits at St. Stephen’s College, while also aspiring to continue his journey in filmmaking in the future. His debut role not only launched his acting career but also established him as a promising figure in the film industry.
