Lia Laats
Lia Laats (February 17, 1926 – April 24, 2004) was a celebrated Estonian actress whose impressive career in stage and film spanned over four decades. Born in Tallinn to Karl René Laats and Helmi Karin Laats (née Tähe), both of whom worked as domestic helpers, she had two older half-siblings from her father's prior marriage. Although she began her studies at the National Drama Theatre (now the Estonian Drama Theatre), she left in 1946 before completing her degree.
Laats made her film debut in 1947 in the Soviet-Estonian drama *Elu tsitadellis* (English: *Life in a Citadel*), directed by Herbert Rappaport. This landmark film, based on a play by Estonian writer and politician August Jakobson, was significant as it marked the first Estonian feature film produced after World War II, following Estonia's annexation by the Soviet Union. The film depicted the impact of Soviet arrival post-German occupation and earned both Laats and the production the prestigious Stalin Prize.
Throughout her career, Laats starred in numerous dramas, but she is particularly remembered for her roles in light-hearted comedies, especially those directed by Sulev Nõmmik, where she frequently appeared alongside actor Ervin Abel. Notable among these are *Mehed ei nuta* (1968), *Noor pensionär* (1972), and *Siin me oleme!* (1979), all of which became beloved classics and are still frequently aired on Estonian television.
