Ray Stevenson
Ray Stevenson (May 25, 1964 – May 21, 2023) was a renowned actor celebrated for his work across film, television, and stage. Born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, he relocated to Lemington, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England in 1972 at the age of eight, later growing up in Cramlington, Northumberland. The second of three sons to a Royal Air Force pilot and an Irish mother, Stevenson harbored dreams of becoming an actor from a young age but initially pursued a career in art. He attended art school and worked as an interior designer in London until, at 25, he resolved to chase his acting aspirations. He subsequently graduated from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School at 29.
Stevenson's acting career took off in the early 1990s, with notable appearances in projects like "The Return of the Native" (1994), alongside Clive Owen and Catherine Zeta-Jones. His breakthrough role came in the epic film "King Arthur" (2004), where he portrayed the loyal knight Dagonet, sharing the screen with a stellar cast, including Keira Knightley and Mads Mikkelsen. His popularity surged with HBO's "Rome" (2005-2007), where he starred as the fearless legionary Titus Pullo.
Among his prominent film roles were the action-horror "Outpost" (2008) and portraying the dark hero Frank Castle in "Punisher: War Zone" (2008). On stage, he performed memorable roles, including Christ in the York Mystery Plays (2000) and the Cardinal in "The Duchess of Malfi" (2003) at the Royal National Theatre. Stevenson is survived by his partner, Elisabetta Carccia, and their son, Sebastiano Derek Stevenson, born in 2007. He also cherished art, particularly watercolor painting.
