Billy Powell

1 title Acting Jun 03, 1952 Died: Jan 28, 2009 Corpus Christi, Texas

Billy Powell was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, and spent his formative years in a military family, which took him to Italy during his father's service in the U.S. Navy. After the tragic loss of his father to cancer in 1960, Powell moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he formed a lasting friendship with Leon Wilkeson in elementary school. His passion for music blossomed as he learned piano from local instructor Madalyn Brown, who recognized his innate talent.

Powell attended Sanford Naval Academy with his brother, later transferring to Bishop Kenny High School, from which he graduated in 1970. He briefly pursued a degree in Music Theory at a community college before embarking on a career as a roadie for the legendary band Lynyrd Skynyrd. During his two years with the crew, he had the chance to showcase his musical abilities at a Bolles School prom, playing a piano rendition of "Free Bird." This moment led to his entry as the band's keyboardist in 1973.

Under Powell's influence, Lynyrd Skynyrd achieved significant success with albums like (pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd) and Second Helping, featuring the iconic "Sweet Home Alabama." Their career was tragically interrupted in 1977 when a plane crash claimed the lives of several members, leaving Powell with severe injuries. He returned to the band in 1987 for a tribute tour and continued to perform until his untimely death from a heart attack on January 28, 2009, at age 56 in Orange Park, Florida.
