Marilyn Burns, originally named Mary Lynn Ann Burns, was born on May 7, 1949, in Erie, Pennsylvania, and later grew up in Houston, Texas. She pursued her passion for performing arts at the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Drama. Marilyn is best remembered as one of the pioneering scream queens of horror cinema, particularly for her iconic role as Sally Hardesty in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). In this groundbreaking film, she portrayed a young woman who, along with her brother and friends, visits her grandfather’s grave only to confront a terrifying, murderous family led by the infamous Leatherface.

Following her success in this classic horror film, she starred in Eaten Alive (1976), where her character unwittingly discovers a hotel run by a deranged proprietor who feeds his guests to a crocodile. Marilyn solidified her status in the genre with appearances in additional horror films, such as Kiss Daddy Goodbye (1981) and Future-Kill (1985). She also portrayed Linda Kasabian in the miniseries Helter Skelter (1976), which focused on the notorious Charles Manson trial, where her character’s testimony was crucial in securing convictions against Manson and his followers.

Later in her career, Marilyn made an uncredited cameo as Sally Hardesty in The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1995) and appeared as Verna Carlson in Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013). Despite these roles and occasional appearances at horror conventions, she led a more private life in Houston. Marilyn Burns passed away at the age of 65 on August 5, 2014, in her sleep, with family members discovering her at home, reportedly from an apparent heart attack.
