Candida Royalle
Candida Royalle, originally named Candice Vandala, was born and raised in New York City, where she honed her talents in dance and music. In 1974, she ventured into the adult film industry, marking the beginning of a remarkable career that would see her star in approximately 25 films during the Golden Age of adult cinema. After a decade of performing, Royalle made the pivotal decision to retire in 1984. She distinguished herself as a pioneering figure in the industry by establishing Femme Productions, becoming the first woman to run her own adult film studio and one of the earliest female directors in the field.
Throughout her career, Royalle sought to create content that emphasized female pleasure and empowerment, challenging the predominantly male-driven narratives of the time. In her later life, she embarked on a personal journey to discover her roots, successfully locating her birth mother with the help of a private investigator, only to learn that she had passed away from ovarian cancer. Tragically, Royalle was diagnosed with ovarian cancer herself not long after this revelation. She fought bravely against the illness until her passing on September 7, 2015. Royalle's legacy endures as a trailblazer who reshaped perceptions in adult entertainment while advocating for women's voices and experiences in a historically male-dominated industry.
