Norman Finkelstein
Norman Gary Finkelstein, born on December 8, 1953, is an influential American political scientist and author recognized for his critical analysis of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the politics surrounding the Holocaust. Finkelstein completed his undergraduate studies at Binghamton University, later earning a Ph.D. in Political Science from Princeton University. His academic career has included teaching roles at several institutions, including Brooklyn College, Rutgers University, Hunter College, New York University, and most recently, DePaul University, where he served as an assistant professor from 2001 to 2007.
Finkelstein is known for his controversial views and outspoken criticisms, especially highlighted during his public dispute with prominent lawyer Alan Dershowitz. This conflict significantly impacted his tenure bid at DePaul University, which was ultimately denied in 2007. Following this, Finkelstein was placed on administrative leave for the academic year 2007-2008 and subsequently announced his resignation on September 5, 2007, after reaching an undisclosed settlement with the institution. Despite the controversy, DePaul University publicly commended Finkelstein as a "prolific scholar and outstanding teacher," emphasizing that external pressures did not influence their tenure decision. Throughout his career, Finkelstein has authored several notable works that continue to spark debate and discussion within academic and public spheres.
