Romário de Souza Faria, born on January 29, 1966, is a Brazilian politician who gained international recognition as a professional footballer. Celebrated for his exceptional goal-scoring ability, he netted over 1,000 goals throughout his career and is regarded as one of the most outstanding players in football history. Romário played a pivotal role in Brazil's victory at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, earning the Golden Ball for being the tournament's best player. He was also honored as the FIFA World Player of the Year in the same year. In 1999, he ranked fifth in the FIFA Player of the Century online poll, was named to the FIFA World Cup Dream Team in 2002, and included in the FIFA 100 list of the greatest living players in 2004.

Romário began his career in Brazil before making a move to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands in 1988. During his five seasons there, he helped the team clinch three Eredivisie titles, contributing an impressive 165 goals in just 167 appearances. In 1993, he joined FC Barcelona, becoming part of Johan Cruyff's "Dream Team" and forming a formidable partnership with Hristo Stoichkov, winning La Liga in his debut season as the league's top scorer with 30 goals from 33 matches. Later in his career, he played for various clubs in Rio de Janeiro, winning the Brazilian league title with CR Vasco da Gama in 2000 and earning the league's top scorer accolade three times. He concluded his playing days with stints in Qatar, the United States, and Australia.

Recognized for his prowess within the penalty area, Romário's quick acceleration and low center of gravity enabled him to evade defenders, and his signature toe poke finish became well-known.
