John Otto "Buck" Young (April 12, 1920 – February 9, 2000) was a notable American actor best remembered for his memorable roles on television. He gained fame as Sergeant Whipple on the beloved series *Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.*, and as Deputy Joe Watson on *The Andy Griffith Show*.

Young's journey began when he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II in 1944. After the war, he pursued a career in acting, marrying fellow actress Peggy Stewart in 1953. Together, they welcomed two children, Grey Young and Abigail Young, both of whom ventured into acting with roles in film.

In 1962, Buck made several guest appearances on the iconic Western series *Gunsmoke*, portraying characters such as Carl, Corporal Stone, and John across multiple episodes. His portrayal of Sgt. Whipple in *Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.*, which premiered in 1964, became one of his most recognized performances, contributing to a career that included appearances in 95 films and television shows.

Additionally, he featured in the *Barnaby Jones* episode "The Last Contract," which aired on December 31, 1974. Buck Young passed away in Los Angeles on February 9, 2000, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances that continue to resonate with audiences.
