Leonora Carrington

1 title Acting Apr 06, 1917 Died: May 25, 2011

Mary Leonora Carrington OBE was a prominent British-born artist and writer who made a significant impact on the surrealist movement and the cultural landscape of Mexico. Born on April 6, 1917, in Lancashire, England, Carrington spent the majority of her adult life in Mexico City, where she became one of the last living links to the 1930s surrealist movement. Her artistic journey began after she encountered the works of German surrealist Max Ernst at the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition in London, which ignited a profound connection that would shape her life and art.

In 1937, Carrington and Ernst formed a partnership that took them to Paris, but their relationship faced turmoil with the onset of World War II. Ernst was arrested by the French authorities, prompting Carrington to seek refuge in Spain. Following a psychological crisis, she was institutionalized; however, she ultimately escaped to Mexico with the help of poet Renato Leduc, whom she married for diplomatic immunity.

In Mexico, Carrington flourished creatively, producing notable works such as the mural "El Mundo Mágico de los Mayas" in 1963, which reflects the rich folklore of the region. In addition to her artistic contributions, she was an influential figure in the women’s liberation movement, designing the iconic poster "Mujeres conciencia" in 1973. Carrington’s legacy endures as a testament to her innovative spirit and commitment to both art and social change, solidifying her status as a trailblazer in the surrealist genre and beyond. She passed away on May 25, 2011, leaving behind a rich tapestry of artistic and cultural contributions.
