Mahmoud Ahmed

Mahmoud Ahmed

1 title Acting

Mahmoud Ahmed, born in the Mercato district of Addis Ababa, developed a passion for music early on, inspired by the tunes broadcasted by Ethiopian radio. With limited formal education, he initially worked as a shoeshiner before taking a handyman position at the Arizona Club, a popular venue for the Imperial Bodyguard Band of Emperor Haile Selassie I. In 1962, when the band’s vocalist failed to appear, Mahmoud seized the opportunity to sing, quickly becoming a staple member of the band until its disbandment in 1974.

His music career took off in 1971 with the release of his first single, "Nafqot New Yegodagn," in collaboration with the Venus Band. Throughout the 1970s, he recorded extensively with various groups under the Amha and Kaifa labels. Despite the political upheaval in Ethiopia, which disrupted the music scene, Mahmoud persisted, producing hit records with bands such as Dahlak and Ibex while also launching his solo career with cassettes featuring his performances on the krar, guitar, and mandolin.

By the late 1980s, after censorship laws restricted vinyl releases, Mahmoud transitioned to cassettes and opened a music store in Addis Ababa. He gained international recognition during a 1980-1981 tour in the U.S., performing with prominent artists. His 1986 compilation, "Ere Mela Mela," introduced him to a broader audience, coinciding with Ethiopia's tumultuous events. His work continued to resonate globally, particularly with the Éthiopiques series launched by Buda Musique in the late 1990s. In 2007, he was honored with a BBC World Music Award. While renowned for his Tizita music, characterized by its nostalgic themes, Mahmoud is also a talented visual artist. Despite declining an exhibition opportunity, he continues to create art reflective of his experiences and emotions.
