Hubert Rees
Hubert Rees (April 27, 1928 – October 20, 2009) was a distinguished Welsh character actor celebrated for his memorable supporting roles in British television during the 1970s and 1980s.
Rees began his acting journey with various character roles, often portraying police officers, which set the stage for his later successes. His television debut came in 1968 with the iconic series Doctor Who, where he played the Chief Engineer in the six-part storyline "Fury from the Deep." He returned to the show in 1969 as Captain Ransom in "The War Games." In 1971, Rees appeared in the thriller film Unman, Wittering and Zigo, followed by a notable role as Butcher Beynon in the 1972 adaptation of Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood.
Throughout the 1970s, Rees became a familiar face on popular series such as Softly, Softly: Taskforce, The Sweeney, The Sandbaggers, and Van der Valk. He made his final Doctor Who appearance in "The Seeds of Doom" alongside Tom Baker before portraying Inspector Lestrade in the 1982 mini-series adaptation of Sherlock Holmes’s The Hound of the Baskervilles. Rees also took on the role of Doctor Watson in The Baker Street Boys in 1983. His versatility shone in the 1980s with roles in hit shows like Bergerac, Howards' Way, and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, alongside appearances in Welsh films such as The Angry Earth (1989) and Darklands (1996). Rees's extensive body of work has left a lasting legacy in British television.
